Region Portfolio: The New Member States and Local Employment Development

This two year project on behalf of DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities was delivered by WYG International in partnership with ECOTEC and a network of national experts.

Our aim was to identify future priorities in Local Employment Development (LED) in the New Member States of the EU, in keeping with the goals of the European Employment Strategy and wider EU objectives, and thereby develop future LED strategy in these countries and in the EU as a whole. The project covered 12 countries - the ten countries that joined the EU in 2004 and the two Candidate Countries of Romania and Bulgaria.

The project has produced extensive data on the current situation of LED in each of the 12 countries; informed the thinking of the European Commission in determining future strategy and policy priorities for the enlarged Union; and has informed and inspired national policymakers and local stakeholders in how promote effective local approaches to employment development in their countries.
