Region Portfolio: Volunteer Reading Help Survey 2007
Volunteer Reading Help (VRH) is a national charity that helps disadvantaged children develop a love for reading and learning. By recruiting and training volunteers to work week on week with children aged 6-11, VRH are able to offer support and assistance to those who find reading a challenge.
VRH operate through over 2000 volunteers, in around 1500 schools, supporting 6000 children. They wanted to obtain robust evidence of the impact that VRH had on the reading age and educational attainment of the children helped.
ECOTEC Survey used a postal survey, sent to 1200 schools, across the 22 regions, to evaluate this impact, as well as looking into softer outcomes such as attendance rates, confidence and self esteem.
The survey yielded a good response and has been able to assist VRH in making comparisons with previous years as well as ascertaining future trends and confirming the value of the service.
