Region Portfolio: Young People's Housing Aspirations
The Oldham Rochdale Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder has been conceived with the aim of bringing more than £2billion worth of investment to parts of Oldham and Rochdale over the next 15 years, to create a better choice of homes in thriving neighbourhoods.
Previous research evidence had shown that young people from the area who have achieved a graduate qualification were unlikely to stay in these boroughs, migrating instead to other parts of Greater Manchester, the North West and England. Moreover, those who did remain in the Oldham and Rochdale boroughs were even less likely to live in Pathfinder neighbourhoods.
By conducting quantitative and qualitative research with students domiciled from Oldham and Rochdale but studying elsewhere, as well as students studying at the University Centre Oldham, ECOTEC Survey sought to understand how best to attract young graduates to the area and retain them in order that they contributed to a more economically active environment for the two towns. Questionnaires and focus groups investigated what housing and communities needed to feature to encourage this group to buy and rent in the Pathfinder neighbourhoods.
